Integrations

A great feature of the best mind mapping tools is represented by the integrations. These make everything easier for the user. For example, you can import files from your favorite cloud storage services like Google Drive, OneDrive, or Dropbox. You can also sign up using different apps like Facebook, Google, Office 365, etc.  Mindomo has many of the most used learning management systems integrations, like Moodle, Google Classroom, Blackboard, Desire2Learn, and more. Also, apps like G Suite, Microsoft Teams, Evernote have integrations available.

2. Benefits

One of the best things about Mindomo is that it's not just a regular mind mapping website, you can collaborate with other people instantly. You can also build collaborative concept maps, organizational charts, timelines, logic diagrams, fishbone diagrams, Gantt chart, and outlines from scratch.

The best part is that you can switch between mind map view, concept map, Gantt chart, and outline view and vice versa. In other words, you can convert all these types of charts between them. For example, you can start a project plan based on a mind map. You can then convert it into a Gantt chart for better project management. Take advantage of this unique feature.

In addition, Mindomo differs from other map tools in the following features:

Checkable tasks: The task management functionality allows you to create checkable tasks. Turn your topics or branches into tasks that can be assigned to other users

Full-text search: Search across a particular mind map or across all your maps using this functionality. Find what you need in seconds and save precious time.

Playback history: You can see an overview of all of your mind map changes, with which you can see the contribution of every member of your team.

Presenter mode: Transform your mind map into a slide by slide presentation. You can choose the slides and their order exactly as you prefer.

Group sharing via Shared Team Folder: Share your mind maps with your entire team easily. You have access to a shared folder where all maps are instantly accessible for all the members.

Audio recording: Record directly when you build your map and add the file there. This is a very handy feature that allows you to customize your diagram.

3. Disadvantages

Here I will present some disadvantages which I found from other people ´s usage of Mindomo but also from my personal experience with this tool:

  • It would be better if they put some hues on the interface.

  • It requires a strong internet connection to work efficiently.

  • The web-based has very minimal features.

  • Accessing it on mobile is pretty challenging.

  • It gives you the feeling that it is outdated while using it.

  • Sometimes, the language is difficult to understand, especially for younger kind who may need help with some tasks here

  • The code formatting and image integration is missing in notes.

  • The visuals are very basic. I’ve used a few mind mapping tools and I found the designs to be unappealing.

  •  The text editing section for annotations could be improved with better resizable & movable window

  • I like that it's web-based, but sometimes connectivity issues can cause problems.

  • Really what I do not like is that to access some formats you have to pay a certain membership
However, you may find the same negatives which I stated or  you  could  unveil other shortcomings during  personal use of this tool.

4. Do ´s and Don´ ts

Do´s and Don´ts

Do´s:

  •       Be careful  what is the purpose of your usage of the Mindomo tool – choose appropriate version (online or desktop,  also pay attention  who it is for - student, teacher, free user, subscribtion, premium... as there are limits for the each one, e.g. in the number of templates allowed to use, or themes and the most importantly - pricing)

  •     Provide brief explanation of tool and show its features to your students before you start working with it ( it is not always easy to follow the instructions)

  •     Use shortcut keys provided  here to help you to work as efficient and fast as you want
( also take advantage of saving your work automatically  in online version)

  •    Give clear directions on how to interact with your content by providing simple instructions

  •       If  used it in class, be sure to check the internet connection as it recquires the strong one for effective use

  •      Embed links, videos, and additional information to enhance the user experience
( test these external links in advance to ensure they work properly)

  •      Use all of its features and also all your older works to create next samples – it allows you to be more effective, creative and time-saving for the other work you have to do

  •      Make your students use it online in a real time  – share your sample and provide time to work on it for them  and then see and discuss the result

Don´ts:

  •    Avoid using low quality pictures or videos for bettter visual experience

  •      Do not use too much information in your content to avoid distraction of students

  •     Don't always rely on templates presented there because it doesn ´t have to suit for your lesson – use your own   if it is possible (try to make them in advance)

  •       Avoid rapid clicking which may result in confussion for both sides –  a teacher and also students
