This one-semester lexicology course will familiarize you with linguistic properties of the English lexicon, including its theoretical & practical facets. We will explore the areas of lexical semantics dealing with the study of the meaning of words, their properties and contexts in which they are used. Essentials of phraseology and lexicography with a special focus on multi-word expressions and dictionaries will also form the subject of our interest. In the second half of the course we will pay heed to word-formation, to the analysis of word-formation processes playing a crucial role in English vocabulary growth and the most distinguishing theories dominating this ambit of linguistics. The course also provides hands-on experience in the use of idioms & collocations. At the same time, it aspires to foster a genuine interest in the immense vocabulary of the English language, providing food for thought and hopefully an answer to why the universe of English words with their oddities represents, more often than not, an intriguing mystery for us, keeping us on our toes all the time.
